STYLE NO. 8062 : Merchant

The historical work boot most similar to the Merchant is style 245 from 1920, which was made without a toe-box, but instead featured a plain toe and raw cut at the quarter edge. The Merchant is built on the 8 last, which is also used for the Blacksmith. But because of the missing toe-box, the Merchant has a slimmer look and a lower toe profile than the Blacksmith. Sole: The Merchant is built on a Chemi Gum sole, which Red Wing has been using for work boots since 1964 and is now introducing in the Heritage line. Featuring a lower cork content than the Nitrile Cork sole. The Chemi Gum sole creates a clean, slim, and lightweight boot.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

When Red Wing Shoe Company was founded in 1905, streets were still muddy, travel was still largely by train or horse-drawn and daily life a little more demanding. So footwear had to be versatile—even a shop owner or banker needed shoes that could keep feet safe and dry but brush off and look good while doing business. The Merchant is a direct descendant of those earliest boots we made, like the style 245 from 1920.

Roughout Leather

Roughout leather is created using a reverse-suede technique at our very own S.B. Foot Tanning Co. While most tanneries split, thin and weaken the hide to create the rough suede surface, we simply use the other side of the hide. By doing so, we avoid splitting or thinning our full-grain hides. This makes our Roughout leather just as strong and durable as our other leathers.

STYLE NO. 8062 : Merchant

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the full grain leather upper, leather footboard and cork midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8062 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes
  • Should be sized up ½ if used with a footbed or orthotic

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A REAL CLASS ACT!!! I struggle buying shoes online, especially high-end shoes. These are my second pair of Red Wing Heritage boots and I have truly come to TRUST this company. You get "EXACTLY" what they say they are. The fit is spot on. The quality is above and beyond my expectations. The suede is thick and even. I used a generous amount of the Red Wing recommended protector and the shoes look as good as new after 3 months of wear. They are quick to break in and have not taken on any creases or wrinkles as they wear. The color and style blends with almost every thing I wear. I often receive comments and compliments on how sharp they look. Do yourself a favor, stop reading this and BUY a pair! Enjoy being a "Step Ahead" of the other men shuffling around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from casual, tough boot I am a week into these boots. They are still breaking me in, but I have full confidence in their durability and reliability. I have worn the redwing moc toe (875) for four years and wear a size 10. Since I wear these boots to the office with dress socks, I got size 9.5 and they fit perfectly. I am already getting a lot of complements. I especially love the low toe volume compared to the iron ranger and beckman.
