STYLE NO. 8062 : Merchant

The historical work boot most similar to the Merchant is style 245 from 1920, which was made without a toe-box, but instead featured a plain toe and raw cut at the quarter edge. The Merchant is built on the 8 last, which is also used for the Blacksmith. But because of the missing toe-box, the Merchant has a slimmer look and a lower toe profile than the Blacksmith. Sole: The Merchant is built on a Chemi Gum sole, which Red Wing has been using for work boots since 1964 and is now introducing in the Heritage line. Featuring a lower cork content than the Nitrile Cork sole. The Chemi Gum sole creates a clean, slim, and lightweight boot.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

When Red Wing Shoe Company was founded in 1905, streets were still muddy, travel was still largely by train or horse-drawn and daily life a little more demanding. So footwear had to be versatile—even a shop owner or banker needed shoes that could keep feet safe and dry but brush off and look good while doing business. The Merchant is a direct descendant of those earliest boots we made, like the style 245 from 1920.

Roughout Leather

Roughout leather is created using a reverse-suede technique at our very own S.B. Foot Tanning Co. While most tanneries split, thin and weaken the hide to create the rough suede surface, we simply use the other side of the hide. By doing so, we avoid splitting or thinning our full-grain hides. This makes our Roughout leather just as strong and durable as our other leathers.

STYLE NO. 8062 : Merchant

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the full grain leather upper, leather footboard and cork midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8062 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Many customers buy Red Wing Heritage footwear 1/2 size smaller than their normal size
  • Trying on Red Wing Heritage footwear in a store is recommended to get the perfect fit
  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific versatile shoe I have or have tried all the Heritage styles and I love this one. The fit is consistent with other styles. I'm actually surprised how much more I like this boot for dressier occasions than I do the others. The different toe box just gives a completely different look although it has a minimal impact on the fit. If you're looking for the boot you can wear with a suit or jeans, this is it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A shooter's logical choice I have been wearing Iron Rangers for about four years now and decided I needed something a bit lighter but durable for my other activities, like pistol shooting for sport. The Merchant is an absolute winner. While it is lighter than the Iron Ranger, the Merchant is rugged, durable, and very comfortable. It took me about three days to break them in with continuous wear. In fact, on the last day I got on the treadmill and walked with them for an hour. This is the kind of footwear that gets better with age. Scuffs and scratches add character to them. I took them to the range and walking outdoors while stepping on gravel and spent cases in 98 degree weather you want sturdy and comfortable boots - these are them. One more thing, the laces are waxed. If you've never had Red Wing boots before, this might feel strange. But, it makes them easier to handle, really.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A REAL CLASS ACT!!! I struggle buying shoes online, especially high-end shoes. These are my second pair of Red Wing Heritage boots and I have truly come to TRUST this company. You get "EXACTLY" what they say they are. The fit is spot on. The quality is above and beyond my expectations. The suede is thick and even. I used a generous amount of the Red Wing recommended protector and the shoes look as good as new after 3 months of wear. They are quick to break in and have not taken on any creases or wrinkles as they wear. The color and style blends with almost every thing I wear. I often receive comments and compliments on how sharp they look. Do yourself a favor, stop reading this and BUY a pair! Enjoy being a "Step Ahead" of the other men shuffling around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great pair of Red Wing boots I've owned two other pairs of Red Wing boots and bought these a few weeks ago. these are a bit narrower and the material is thicker than iron ranger - a bit uncomfortable for the first couple of days. Love the new design and style! Highly recommend these boots!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous Boot, Thick & Durable Leather, Stylish I just received the second pair today, size 10, ...after returning the 10.5. I normally wear a size 10 in Iron Rangers. I decided to buy 10.5 and they were too big. The heel slipped. Sized to a 10 and bingo. Same fit as the Iron Ranger and built on the same last I was told by a Representative from Red Wings. I love the traction on the bottom! These will be perfect for the office or for casual. Dress them up with a pair of khakis or selvedge denim! I can't wait to wear these to work!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better fit, same great quality. I own Beckmans, Iron Rangers and other 11" RW slip-ons so I know the RW quality. The Merchant is instantly a tighter fit than my Beckmans. Both are 11.5 and I use and insole. If you are like me and have a narrow fit, the Merchant fits tighter and lighter - and its a good thing. The Beckmans have been my favorite fitting boot so going with another boot was a big decision. RW's are like divorces, they're expensive but they are worth it! Buy the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Legendary New Style The Merchant 8061 is an all-season lightweight boot, compared to its heavier 6" counterparts. A narrower silhouette fits the ankle nicely, with the absence of a toe box allowing an instantly comfortable fit that one would find on a desert boot; as the upper is shaped closer to a chukka, than a traditional work boot. I have owned my Beckman 9011s for over four years, and its lug sole, toe box, and heavy construction contrasts the more streamlined Merchant 8061; the Ebony Harness leather is a beautiful dark chocolate color that will age wonderfully, and the boot is constructed with the same craftsmanship and care that you will find on any Red Wing Heritage footwear. I am extremely pleased, and expect to wear these boots for a long time. For sizing, I am a Brannock 10D, and sized down to a 9.5D with this particular boot, resulting in a perfect fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from casual, tough boot I am a week into these boots. They are still breaking me in, but I have full confidence in their durability and reliability. I have worn the redwing moc toe (875) for four years and wear a size 10. Since I wear these boots to the office with dress socks, I got size 9.5 and they fit perfectly. I am already getting a lot of complements. I especially love the low toe volume compared to the iron ranger and beckman.
