STYLE NO. 101 : Postman Oxford

Known as the postman’s shoe, the 101 is crafted with Black Chaparral leather, a black cushion crepe and wedge sole for extreme sturdiness, underfoot comfort and a classic look.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

In the 1950s, policemen still walked their beats and the postman walked his mail route. The hours spent on their feet called for comfortable and sturdy footwear and in 1954, Red Wing responded with style No. 101, a sturdy black oxford with a moldable insole. The shoe could be polished to meet uniform requirements, but it was tough enough for everything a policeman or mail carrier encountered on his rounds. Today the Postman is offered in a variety of color options.

Full finished leathers have a smooth, polished surface that enhances the natural beauty of the leather. Full finished leathers have a smooth, polished surface that enhances the natural beauty of the leather.

Smooth-Finished Leather

Smooth-Finished leathers have a polished surface that enhances the true beauty and quality of the leather. Only the most premium, top-quality hides are used to craft Smooth-Finished leathers. The result is a beautiful, classic-looking leather used to build more elegant styles, such as the Red Wing Heritage Beckman Collection. The polished look and feel of the Smooth-Finished leather requires more specialized care and attention to keep it maintained.

STYLE NO. 101 : Postman Oxford

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the full grain leather upper, leather footboard and cork midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 101 is built using the No. 210 Last:

  • Was designed for increased flexibility and lighter duty work
  • Most customers buy Red Wing Heritage footwear 1/2 size smaller than their normal size
  • Trying on Red Wing Heritage footwear in a store is recommended to get the perfect fit

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy break in. Only a couple weeks in and already perfectly broken in. One small complaint would be that they don’t come with the little totes like the women’s heritage line. The bags are nice for traveling to protect the boots and clothes if packed in the same duffel bag or suit case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Navy Blue Abilene Oxford 3rd pair of Red Wings, I have a 6" Moc Toe and Iron Ranger, both in 8.5 size and fit great. I tried this in the 8.5 and it was definitely snug so I sized up to a 9 and it was perfect. I've had them about a month now. The break in was not nearly as painful as my Iron Rangers which took about a month of pain. These took about 14 days to stop having any sore spots on my feet and none were ever that painful. Beautiful shoes, I've had several remarks on the color and style. It's nice to have a pair of Red Wings I can wear in warmer weather. Looking at the Oxblood Mesa in this same style as well now. Would definitely recommend.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Been wearing for six months I purposely waited some time to give these shoes a proper review. I wear these shoes every single work day, Monday through Friday. These shoes are a tight on me. I had to go up in length from a 10.5 to an 11 because the pain was too much. It took a couple months before they started getting to feeling somewhat bearable. I normally wear a 10.5 EE but I guess they don't have a postman in that size. I really do wish they were a bit wider because I could've gotten my normal sized 10.5, now I'm stuck with wearing a shoe that is too long. There are some mornings where maybe my feet are a little more swollen then usual, but I go to put them in the postman shoes and they just hurt. Sometimes mid day, I stick my fist in the shoes and try to stretch them out a bit because the pain is so unbearable. I do like the look of the shoes and the quality is excellent and what you'd expect from a heritage Red Wing shoe. I have a pair of heritage 10.5 moc boots and had them stretched and they are very comfortable. I haven't had these postmans stretched yet. Maybe I should get them stretched at the store. I was hoping after six months that these shoes would have conformed to my feet, but they are still a bit too small. I only buy Red Wings for work because of their durability. Now I work in an office so I decided to buy a Red Wing shoe but if I could've done it again, I really wish I would've picked something else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Try Before You Buy My motivation in writing this is to encourage buyers to take the time, if possible, and go to the store and have the shoe/boot sized for your foot. Try before you buy. My father bought me my 1st pair of Irish Setters back in the school year of 79/80. I have enjoyed Redwings ever since. As I aged I kept having to adjust my shoe size, but this comes with the territory. My last pair of work boots that I bought were a 996 and they were size 10 (the last several purchases were size 10). This would have been the 1st pair of Redwings that ever failed me. (I live in SE Asia and was out inspecting some corn fields when a sole fell off – I’m not really sure what happened but the next time I go Stateside I will have them repaired). The next pair of Redwings that I bought were these Postman Oxford 3103s for church and going out to dinner. I researched on the internet and knew that I fancied these. When I went Stateside I went into the store and after trying on the shoe I went up to a 10 ½. I am very pleased that I did. Now I am starting the process over again and am looking at the Blacksmith 3341 and the new Foreman Chukka 9219. My dilemma is the size. The Chukka is made with the 210 Last whereas the Blacksmith with the 8 Last. I suspect that with the Blacksmith I can drop back down to the size 10 but with the Chukka I may need to go with the size that I bought these Postman Oxfords in. I can wait until I go Stateside but run the risk of the store not having my size. Last time I was dragging my family around on the mass transit trains of D.C. looking for the stores. When I found the Redwing Store the manager was great but they did not have the 3103 in size 10. I dodged the bullet by needing to go up a size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best fitting shoe I've ever had This shoe really takes the Postman up a notch. I was always interested in the 101, but what kept me away was the fact that when I looked at it all I was reminded of was that it was a postal worker shoe. The new Rough and Tough leathers on the white crepe sole really bring the line up a notch when it comes to fashion while keeping the quality and craftsmanship the same. I also own the 8111 and the 1907 boots in addition to the 3119 postman. In comparison I find the comfort out of the box to be the best with the 3119, but that has most to do with the fact that it fits me perfectly in 9.5D while my 1907's were too snug and the 8111's were too long.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most comfortable oxfords I have ever worn! I am a long time Red Wing customer, but until now have only worn their boots. To switch it up a tad from my Iron Rangers, I decided to add a pair of the Postman Oxfords into my work and weekend rotation. I must say these are the most comfortable Oxfords I have ever worn and definitely share the same quality as all of my other Red Wings. It is great to see that they still are made in the USA as well. I highly recommend these as a great casual/weekend oxford that can work well when dressed up at the office or with a pair of jeans in the bar. On a side note, I wear a 9.5 in my Iron Rangers and ordered these in a 10 per recommendation of the great folks at Red Wing Heritage and they fit perfectly!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most comfortable shoes ever I bought these shoes with slight hesitancy because I prefer wearing a boot with a soft sole. But I was extremely surprised to find how comfortable these Oxfords are. I've gotten numerous compliments about them. I'll definitely be looking into the Olive Green Oxfords for my next pair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is an excellent shoe from Red Wing Heritage I will say that initially the shoe felt great. Then it after a wear or two it definitely needed to go through a break-in period. That has lasted about 4 months. They are now everyday shoes and are easily my go to shoes. Very happy with the overall quality and craftsmanship. The all leather footbed is broken in and very comfortable.
