STYLE NO. 8084 : Iron Ranger

The 8084 is a rugged 6-inch boot, featuring premium Black Harness leather, chrome hardware, speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction, triple stitched quality, plus a durable Vibram® 430 Mini-lug sole for grip while maintaining the classic Iron Ranger construction and silhouette.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

The early history of iron mining on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range is intertwined with that of Red Wing Shoe Company. The miners needed tough but comfortable boots that could stand up to the long days and tough conditions a northern Minnesota mine pit presented. Red Wing responded with a boot made of thick leather with an oil resisting outer sole, speed lacing hooks, and a comfortable cork midsole. The defining characteristic of these boots though, was their double layered toe, capped to protect the miner’s feet from injury as they labored with hand tools and heavy machinery. That boot is still made today, the fittingly named Iron Ranger, and it represents not only Red Wing’s commitment to making boots for working men and women but also its Minnesota origins.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for oil-tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 108+ year history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing quality and durability I had been looking to purchase a pair of brown Iron Rangers for a while, but I had a hard time overcoming the initial cost because I did know if it was worth it. I’ll be honest, I’m a hard working guy and I didn’t want to spend money on a bad quality product. I am a Police Officer and get a stipend for boots so I decided to buy a pair in black (#8086) to test them out before spending my own money. I knew that if the Iron Ranger could withstand the elements of patrol they could handle just about anything as a causal boot. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the comfort and look; but I expected that would happen, and was more interested in durability over time. For the next couple of months I walked through puddles, mud and grass, stood in pouring rain and 100+ degree heat. Here I am almost a year later and I am blown away at the quality and how the Iron Ranger is held up over time. Not only is this the most comfortable boot I’ve ever worn, but it has no sign of damage or defects. The Iron Ranger proved itself to me during this little experiment and I definitely plan to purchase that brown pair I originally wanted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from iron ranger black harness I ordered these 3 weeks ago just came in today went in to fit and like I figured fits like a glove. I knew what size to get cuz I already have 3 other iron rangers so there was no guessing. I have to say these boots are what I expected from Red Wing nothing less just love them the quality and looks are just awesome....thanks Red Wing for still making USA handmade boots please don't change.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit and improving with age I bought these boots after advice from a stockist who recommended going a whole size down. I have worn worn these for almost 2 years and they have shaped perfectly to my foot. The patina is still developing. A word of advice...don’t apply mink oil to these as they darken the leather and you lose the right copper look.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Well designed boots These are a well-made pair of boot. They broke in easily and have handled everyday use well. The only reason I knocked the quality is that mine came with a cut in the leather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent looks, feel and comfort. The breaking in was longer than expected, did buy half size smaller and glad I did as the boot conforms well to the foot and a larger boot would have made for an easier initial period but I feel the boot wouldn’t have take the shape so accurately. One note of discomfort was that one of the top speed hooks was scratching my ankle; little coaxing with a hammer resolved the matter. If the material used for the speed hooks was a little sturdier it would be appreciated as these bend way too easily. Overall a great boot that feels great and looks even better. Will get myself a pair of Mocs too as the brand is up to my standards. Paid good dollars but got my moneys worth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comparison w/Made in England Doc Martens 1460 Similar style boots (this and the English-made Doc 1460). The Red Wing is one lace-level shorter than the 8-eye Doc; but this is a better albeit more-expensive boot. Why? 1. Better leather. 2. More secure fit all around the ankle area. 3. Tighter lacing/fit across the top of front foot area. 4. Better sole material and work (although wet traction is better with the Doc). 5. Half-sizes are an option....not so with English Docs. 6. Red Wings will likely last longer. Spend the cash on Red Wings....you won’t be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Do It. First off, the quality of the materials and the craftsmanship is top notch. On top of that the design aesthetic looks great. As far as the comfort goes, they will be...eventually. It took me about 3 weeks of wearing them every other day, for full 10 hour days, to get rid of all the pinch points and such. The footbed now has grooves that fit my foot and I can tell that it will get more and more comfortable. IMPORTANT: The fit. TRY THEM ON! The size number is not the most important part of the fit. For example, I wear a size 13 in athletic shoes and casual shoes (up to 13.5); size 11.5 Iron Rangers gave me enough space to FREELY wiggle my toes. The problem is the area that goes around my arch was too tight and the ball of my foot landed in a bad spot. I tried on and bought a size 12, which was snug around the arch, but had the ball of my foot land in a better spot. The fit AROUND your foot is what is important and should be a bit snug/stiff when new. Lastly, the Vibram sole is good on concrete, but not much else. So just keep in mind what your use will be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy Them I worked around the clock to find a boot of equal reputation, quality and style. Man, this thing so handsome I look at my pics of it when I am away from the boot.
