STYLE NO. 8084 : Iron Ranger

The Iron Ranger is an American icon that is beloved for its standout style and long-lasting construction. With its toe cap, speed hooks, and Vibram® outsole, there’s no mistaking this leather legend.

The early history of iron mining on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range is intertwined with that of Red Wing Shoe Company. The miners needed tough but comfortable boots that could stand up to the long days and tough conditions a northern Minnesota mine pit presented. Red Wing responded with a boot made of thick leather with an oil resisting outer sole, speed lacing hooks, and a comfortable cork midsole. The defining characteristic of these boots though, was their double layered toe, capped to protect the miner’s feet from injury as they labored with hand tools and heavy machinery. That boot is still made today, the fittingly named Iron Ranger, and it represents not only Red Wing’s commitment to making boots for working men and women but also its Minnesota origins.

Oil Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather. Oil Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for oil-tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 108+ year history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boots! This is my second pair of Iron Rangers. My 8111 is with me for 2 years now and i love them so much. They've been with me all over the world and keep looking better with age. Two weeks ago i bought an 8083 Hawthorne Muleskinner and i'm so impressed (again). While the leather feels a little bit thicker than my Amber Harness 8111, the break-in is going much smoother and easier (or maybe i'm just simply used to it by now). I wore them around the house for a few hours and already felt the leather started working with my feet while it warmed up. Obviously it is going to take quite a bit of time for the leather footbed and cork underneath to mould to my feet (i have a great example of that with my 8111s). I am really looking forward to the whole process anyway. After owning these boots for a few years now i can give my highest recommendation, but be nice to them - give them time to dry between wears (especially when you use them for many hours throughout the day), and don't forget to condition them every once in a while (leather footbed inside needs to be conditioned to stay supple and prevent cracking). Put simply - I'm a Red Wing guy for life!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfection Since I bought these boots, I’ve been wearing them almost daily for the past half year. They’re perfection and they age beautifully.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic Style Great looking boot out of the box. Very Classic Style. Not bad to break in. I ware a 10 1/2. I bought a 10 1/2. Hoping to buy a second pair in a different color

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected I've been thinking about getting these boots for a year or so. Visiting my local AD several times trying them out but over $300 was to step. One month ago I pulled the trigger anyway and I don't regret it. I thought they should be a really nice pair of boots but they are exellent. I've read that they are hard to break in but after three days they felt great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect boot! I have 3 pairs of Iron Rangers in various colors, with the black harness being my most recent purchase. Once broken in, there is simply not a better overall boot on the market for both style and quality. They do run big, so try them on before you buy. My first pair of IRs were a 9.5 and still fit relatively well, but I've realized that I'm a 9 in most pairs. Try them on and give them some real time to break in. You won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boots!! These are my 2nd pair of Iron Rangers, but the 1st pair with the lug sole. The lug soles improve shock absorption and also reduce noise walking the halls at work. Fit is as expected. I wear 13 in my running shoes and 12 in my Red Wings.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from They're simply not comfortable. First off, they run big. Go into a store and get expert fitted. The problem is they simply are not comfortable. They are the worst boots I've owned for comfort. I thought it was the break-in period at first, but I have almost 100 miles on these and they're still just terrible. I've tried two different inserts, neither helped much. I conditioned the leather a ton to get it to soften. Blisters constantly from the top toe cap, there is no support in them, back pain is worse, and I've just never been more sore from a pair of boots. Sadly, these probably actually will last forever. Mostly because they'll only come out of the closet when I need the traction on ice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic quality I had been looking for a new pair of boots after my Lowa boots sole finally died and I wanted a pair that could be worn smart or for a day out. After a very short internet search: Redwing. These boots fit the bill. At about 3 months old of daily use they get better looking each time I wear them. They have developed a lovely broken in shape of my foot and a patina is coming along. When it’s time for a night out or a dinner with the wife: clean and polish. Look smart. When it’s time to walk the dog or head out for the day they do the job perfectly. Now just to be clear about sizing, I wear a uk 9.5 on most boots and shoes. I ordered these UK 8.5 and they fit like a 9.5. They are made very long (why not adjust sizing charts redwing?). Breaking in took about 2 weeks total, suck it up and once your done they are like old slippers when you put them on. Now that winter is on its way Iv been looking at getting an 8” high boot and Redwing Harvester boots look just the ticket! You get what you pay for. Buy cheap - Buy twice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Boots! I bought factory 2nds from a buddy and I couldn't tell you the difference between those and the 1st. A little cleaning and conditioning and it looked brand spanking new. I got these in a 7D. For some odd reason, they fit very similar to my pair of Beckmans which are a 7.5D. Both are a touch loose at the toes. Maybe I'm a 6.5 in Redwings. No problem though, I threw in a pair of insoles for my Iron Rangers and they fit like a glove now. If you have a store near you, I highly suggest going in person to get sized. The leather is of fantastic quality. Great overall look and feel. I highly recommend this iconic boot! My next purchase are the Roughnecks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Black iron ranger. 8084 Love the boots, looks great with a black untuckit shirt! Love the contrast of black to tan, Goodyear welt construction! Runs large so order .5 smaller....I like to break them in with heavy wool socks....about 1 month!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the investment! Love my Rangers. As a tool maker, I'm on my feet at least 8 hours a day. Once I lace up my boots they don't come off for about 12 hrs. I couldn't be happier with them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A perfect all round boot I was looking for a good year round boot and the Iron Ranger fit the bill. It is incredibly hardwearing and after over a year's worth of use it shows almost no damage. The leather has stood up to mud, sand, concrete, snow and ice without staining or marking. The soles have worn slightly but i expect to get at least 3 years before they need resoling, which is superb. These boots took a few weeks to break in the footbed, but no more than usual for goodyear welted products. Criticisms. I have only two criticisms. One, the soles are incredibly sturdy but lac any padding at all, so if you are intending to walk any distance in these you will want to invest in either very thick socks or a softer insole. Two, these dont handle snow / freezing temps particuarly well. It doesn't damage the boot at all, but your feet will get cold. To be fair they weren't designed for that. Overall an excellent buy and well worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well happy with them. Feel amazing and look as good. Was initially reluctant to buy due to the price - I've never paid even half that for shoes before - however, glad I did. I bought a pair online but they were too long so went to RW London and swapped them: the store were amazing - friendly and knowledgeable - and helped me get the right size; massive props to them. I've got the EE width (my foot is 11cm wide at the widest bit when stood) and they fit beautifully. They're comfortable and supportive without being stiff and unyielding. The sole is good and solid but still comfortable. Due to this and the excellent customer service I received, RW London now have customer for life. Good work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality, beware I ordered them online. First pair came with bruised leather, absolutely not premium material. I returned them, purchased second pair. This one came with damaged one shoe in a way that stitches were torn. On top of the shoes in this pair have slightly different colour. Both shipment contained a note confirming careful quality control- which is funny overall; I never wear them, second pair was returned immediately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have 2 pair- 8114 and 8115 and both are excellent. I purchased a pair of the 8115 2 years ago. The rough and tough leather is excellent. It seems to be "self healing", and it is very forgiving on scratches and such. They say to go 1 size down, but in my case that wasn't for me. I purchased my regular size (10.5 D). I have found that I can adjust the size by adjusting how I lace them up. I have very flat feet, and the lack of arch support is a plus for me. Sometimes I use Red Wing inserts, and some times I don't depending on the condition of my feet that day. I have wide feet, and the combination of wide feet and flat feet make this boot fit me perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully crafted, good comfort and performance. This pair boots are a great deal. They wear a bit larger than usual RW sizes, so be sure you try them before buying. I used to buy a US 8.5 of the chukka boots from RedWing, the Iron Rangers are half size smaller. Since I wore my Iron Rangers for the first time in October, I have wear them almost every day. Living in Milano Italy, the cold and rainy season last almost 6 months, so I find myself walking a lot on the rain with these boots, and no problem, my feet are dry no matter the weather. Two days ago I put the oil on them and they have turn back as almost new. I like them so much that I have been thinking to by the Oxblood leather ones with the Vibram soles for more grip when the snow will show up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good and cheap usually aren't found on the same shelf I wear my Iron Rangers from the first cold in the fall until it starts to get too hot in the spring... and then some. I've gone through three Finnish cold seasons with them, and they still show no real wear and tear, and look basically brand new after being oiled up. The break-in period was predictably painful but once they molded to my feet, I can't imagine a better-fitting pair of boots. The only negative side to them is the fact that the treadless nitrile cork sole has precisely zero grip on ice or packed snow.. So either get them resoled or be careful!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from still uncomfortable many reviews are positive and i can agree with all those things - yes they are well done, good quality, aging great, looks classy, break-in is painful (but you will take it) and so on. one thing i can't take yes these are work boots but could it be more modern finally have more modern, comfortable, anti-fatigue insole, or any insole inside? i wear my pair for two years actually they fit ok but i still feel discomfort while walking. i've installed some anti-fatigue orthopedic insole and it made it less uncomfortable but not too much. so i wish sometime these incredibly stylish boots will have some modern features to make them really perfect

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for I prefer to wear boots most of the time, as I walk a lot, and like the support and weatherproof qualities of boots generally. I think I've had most of the decent quality boots available in the UK (excluding the brogue-type fashion boots made by some UK bootmakers, which are superb quality, very expensive but not my "thing"), and some have lasted, most fall apart within 2 or 3 years, and oddly, some "cheap and cheerful" ones have outperformed the dearer models. I decided to buy a pair of RW Iron Rangers 8119, mainly because I wanted a cleated sole, but also because the colour seemed likely to hold up better under the conditions in which I'd wear them. Although expensive, they seem to have a good reputation, so I went for a pair. I take a UK size 8, and I pondered the advice about going down a half-size. As I usually wear thin socks with shoes and thicker ones with boots, and occasionally need a removable insole, I decided to stick with the size 8. Although I could possibly have got away with going down the half-size, when laced up properly these boots don't flap around on my feet, and I know that I can wear them with even thicker socks in the winter. So no problems with fit, and they've become comfortable after about 2 days of wear. I also like the idea of a quality product from a particular country actually being made in that country i.e. the USA.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great classic boots Really pleased with these Iron Ranger - Amber Harness. First day of wearing and they are fine. Thin socks, so I ordered a UK 9 instead of my usual UK 10. Just perfect ! Calne Motorbike Festival, UK tomorrow, just brilliant.
