STYLE NO. 8086 : Iron Ranger

The rugged 6-inch 8086 Iron Ranger features premium Charcoal Rough & Tough leather, dark gun metal eyelets and speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction, triple stitched quality, plus a durable Vibram® 430 Mini-lug sole for grip while maintaining the classic Iron Ranger construction and silhouette.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

The early history of iron mining on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range is intertwined with that of Red Wing Shoe Company. The miners needed tough but comfortable boots that could stand up to the long days and tough conditions a northern Minnesota mine pit presented. Red Wing responded with a boot made of thick leather with an oil resisting outer sole, speed lacing hooks, and a comfortable cork midsole. The defining characteristic of these boots though, was their double layered toe, capped to protect the miner’s feet from injury as they labored with hand tools and heavy machinery. That boot is still made today, the fittingly named Iron Ranger, and it represents not only Red Wing’s commitment to making boots for working men and women but also its Minnesota origins.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for oil-tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 108+ year history.

STYLE NO. 8086 : Iron Ranger

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the full grain leather upper, leather footboard and cork midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8086 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes
  • Should be sized up ½ if used with a footbed or orthotic

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boot. A sharp looking boot that fights a variety of occasions. Would recommend this boot to others in a heartbeat. The charcoal look is great with almost anything you wear. If I were to be asked what I like about this boot is: it's shape, design and quality is worth the money. I wouldn't be displease if they began to offer this boot in a larger Width like the other colors. But what a phenomenal boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has potential to be a winter boot for life I bought these as a durable boot that could be resoled and repaired with age. I have a UK 9.5 left foot and 9 right foot, opting for a pair of size 9 is perfect for my left foot but slightly loose on my right. I wear with a Red Wing insoles and Darn Tough heavy socks to insulate from the cold weather. They are too much to wear all seasons, so they are rested half the year and i rotate with the lighter Work Chukka during the warmer months.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boots! This is my second pair of Iron Rangers. My 8111 is with me for 2 years now and i love them so much. They've been with me all over the world and keep looking better with age. Two weeks ago i bought an 8083 Hawthorne Muleskinner and i'm so impressed (again). While the leather feels a little bit thicker than my Amber Harness 8111, the break-in is going much smoother and easier (or maybe i'm just simply used to it by now). I wore them around the house for a few hours and already felt the leather started working with my feet while it warmed up. Obviously it is going to take quite a bit of time for the leather footbed and cork underneath to mould to my feet (i have a great example of that with my 8111s). I am really looking forward to the whole process anyway. After owning these boots for a few years now i can give my highest recommendation, but be nice to them - give them time to dry between wears (especially when you use them for many hours throughout the day), and don't forget to condition them every once in a while (leather footbed inside needs to be conditioned to stay supple and prevent cracking). Put simply - I'm a Red Wing guy for life!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wondering your size? Don’t have a close dealer ? Maybe this can help I wanted to leave a review about sizing !! Because at the end of the day great looking boots have to feel good. No matter how well the boots are made if you choose the wrong size you just wasted some $$. So this is my iron ranger sizing. I wear a size 9.5 USA In adidas (superstars to be exact ) . Going down one whole size works great for me the first 4 days I was so sure I went too small!! Not the case after a week of wear 24/7 besides sleep they fit great ! So don’t get discouraged tough it out and you’ll have a better fit in my opinion. I’ve read a lot of people only sizing down 1/2 a sizing and in 6 months wishing they had gone a full size down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One year in and going strong... I held off on reviewing these boots until I put a good amount of hours into them, cause I can't stand reading "they look great out of the box." I've had my Rangers for a year, and have worn them probably about 100 days. I work in an office, so they're not seeing hard labor, but to get to work I walk about two miles through whatever the city throws at me. I've taken them on numerous hikes, and while they're not ideal for anything too serious, they get the job done and keep me comfortable. They're great. The break in process was arduous, but not as bad at people make it seem. I wanted a straight black boot, but when I purchased mine, the Harness Black was only available with the nitrile cork sole. I live in the Northeast, so something with traction to get me through the snow and rain was a must-have. I conditioned with Red Wing Boot Oil about three times over the year, and they're now right where I wanted them as far as color goes. The leather gets buttery smooth and supple over time, and the footbed perfectly molds to your body. They definitely run big--I wear a 13 or 14 in sneakers, but take a 12 in boots. I'd definitely recommend sizing down a half to a full size depending on your specifics. My one complaint is the longevity of the sole: I have flat feet, so I step hard on the ball of my foot. Every pair of shoes I own gets worn down right there, and my Rangers are no exception to that. I still have a little life left in the sole, but I'm hesitent to push it to the limit since I've read that Red Wing will refuse to resole the boot if the footbed is damaged. I plan on getting them resoled with a full lug, perhaps with the Roughneck sole. I love my Rangers so much that I recently purchased another pair of Red Wings--Blacksmith in Copper Rough and Tough. They're made on the same last as the Ranger, so I know I'll love them too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great American Made product. One of thevmost important things for me is that this product is nade in the USA. So far im not done breaking in the boots, but i like what i feel about the boots so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected I've been thinking about getting these boots for a year or so. Visiting my local AD several times trying them out but over $300 was to step. One month ago I pulled the trigger anyway and I don't regret it. I thought they should be a really nice pair of boots but they are exellent. I've read that they are hard to break in but after three days they felt great.
