STYLE NO. 8086 : Iron Ranger

The rugged 6-inch 8086 Iron Ranger features premium Charcoal Rough & Tough leather, dark gun metal eyelets and speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction, triple stitched quality, plus a durable Vibram® 430 Mini-lug sole for grip while maintaining the classic Iron Ranger construction and silhouette.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

The early history of iron mining on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range is intertwined with that of Red Wing Shoe Company. The miners needed tough but comfortable boots that could stand up to the long days and tough conditions a northern Minnesota mine pit presented. Red Wing responded with a boot made of thick leather with an oil resisting outer sole, speed lacing hooks, and a comfortable cork midsole. The defining characteristic of these boots though, was their double layered toe, capped to protect the miner’s feet from injury as they labored with hand tools and heavy machinery. That boot is still made today, the fittingly named Iron Ranger, and it represents not only Red Wing’s commitment to making boots for working men and women but also its Minnesota origins.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for oil-tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 108+ year history.

STYLE NO. 8086 : Iron Ranger

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the full grain leather upper, leather footboard and cork midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8086 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes
  • Should be sized up ½ if used with a footbed or orthotic

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected I've been thinking about getting these boots for a year or so. Visiting my local AD several times trying them out but over $300 was to step. One month ago I pulled the trigger anyway and I don't regret it. I thought they should be a really nice pair of boots but they are exellent. I've read that they are hard to break in but after three days they felt great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great boot, sizing was a challenge Size 11 on the scale. Tried a 10.5, too big, tried 10, Slightly too big. I went with a narrow 9.5 and it was slightly tight on my two outer toes on my right foot and after a couple weeks of wearing fit very nice. I’m glad I didn’t stick with the 10 and sized down further. I read too many different opinions in reviews from people who don’t wear boots everyday for rugged use so it was hard gain any insight from them (sizing or otherwise) I really like the boots. They were more than I wanted to spend but I wanted something that will last. They seem well built and I’m hoping to have them for many many years. Once they get beat up and worn in they feel and look right. I wear them everyday, ride motorcycles , go camping , spend a lot of time outdoors. Glad I bought them and was patient with the sizing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Iron Rangers are the best boots I own! 2 pair! Copper R&T and now Charcoal R&T. Love the high quality, cut of leather, and overall marksmanship. Even have the month/yr of build on the tongue. Very cool. Red Wing story is part of Americana.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love to boot The day I got the boot it fit like a glove. It was slightly stiff but fit perfectly. I have had the boot for about a month now and it is starting to really break in. I wear them daily and I would say that they are a great beginner boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic quality I had been looking for a new pair of boots after my Lowa boots sole finally died and I wanted a pair that could be worn smart or for a day out. After a very short internet search: Redwing. These boots fit the bill. At about 3 months old of daily use they get better looking each time I wear them. They have developed a lovely broken in shape of my foot and a patina is coming along. When it’s time for a night out or a dinner with the wife: clean and polish. Look smart. When it’s time to walk the dog or head out for the day they do the job perfectly. Now just to be clear about sizing, I wear a uk 9.5 on most boots and shoes. I ordered these UK 8.5 and they fit like a 9.5. They are made very long (why not adjust sizing charts redwing?). Breaking in took about 2 weeks total, suck it up and once your done they are like old slippers when you put them on. Now that winter is on its way Iv been looking at getting an 8” high boot and Redwing Harvester boots look just the ticket! You get what you pay for. Buy cheap - Buy twice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome It is because of these boots I was able to return to Construction/Carpentry after a 15' fall 4 yrs ago. I build corrals and repair barns 12-16 hrs a day in mud muck and wet grass. Good heavy wool socks and good pine tar leather protect keeps my feet dry and happy. I do use a ozone boot dryer that has kept them smelling like leather, and helps keep leather supple for the next morning. The leather, and how they broke in over last 6 months reminds me of my old baseball gloves, just getting better and better over time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Iron Ranger Has A Cult Following For A Reason I'm a long time fan of Red Wing products. I bought my first pair of chukkas in 2009, then ordered a pair of Beckman's in 2011. A few weeks ago, after some indecision between black and charcoal I pulled the trigger on these Iron Rangers in charcoal. I wanted a boot that was a little more casual than the Beckman that I didn't have to worry about roughing up. Out of the box they have the fit and finish that you'd expect of Red Wing's products. I love how easy these are to put on and take off due to the lace hooks at the top, this was one of my major pet peeves with the Beckman boot. Although I really have no complaints about the Beckman they are difficult to take off, especially when going through airport security. I'm happy with my choice of charcoal. I like the gun metal gray hardware on this boot over the chrome in the other colors. The color is slight in some places, you can see the tan color of the leather coming through in the right light but I know they'll darken with time. The imperfections add to the character of them. The leather on the Iron Ranger wasn't quite as stiff as the other two pairs of Red Wing's I own which made the break-in period much faster and easier. The sole is also more flexible and has slightly more bend to it, making these more comfortable to walk in. I'm looking forward to putting many more miles in the coming years! Thanks for making such phenomenal products. You have a customer for life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product, runs a bit on the large side. Excellent pair of boots! I purchased these as my business-casual set of boots. I thought about wolverine 1000 miles but was concerned about durability and after deciding on these I'm not disappointed! They aren't the most 'business' looking but they do the job very well. The charcoal leather is thick takes some working but once it breaks in its fantastic. The outsole is very grippy, I've had zero issues with slipping and the stitching on my pair was phenomenal. The strangest part was getting used to the leather insole. I was prepared for a difficult break-in but surprisingly mine took only about two weeks to feel like a pair of socks. Considering the way I wear these I've no doubt this pair of Redwings will be just like my last pair; a second skin that lasts for at least three resolings.
