STYLE NO. 8119 : Iron Ranger

The rugged 6-inch 8119 Iron Ranger features premium Oxblood Mesa leather, bronze hardware, speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction, triple stitched quality, plus a durable Vibram® 430 Mini-lug sole for grip while maintaining the classic Iron Ranger construction and silhouette.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

The early history of iron mining on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range is intertwined with that of Red Wing Shoe Company. The miners needed tough but comfortable boots that could stand up to the long days and tough conditions a northern Minnesota mine pit presented. Red Wing responded with a boot made of thick leather with an oil resisting outer sole, speed lacing hooks, and a comfortable cork midsole. The defining characteristic of these boots though, was their double layered toe, capped to protect the miner’s feet from injury as they labored with hand tools and heavy machinery. That boot is still made today, the fittingly named Iron Ranger, and it represents not only Red Wing’s commitment to making boots for working men and women but also its Minnesota origins.

Oil Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather. Oil Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for oil-tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 108+ year history.

STYLE NO. 8119 : Iron Ranger

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the Full Grain Leather upper, Leather footboard and Cork Midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8119 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes
  • Should be sized up ½ if used with a footbed or orthotic

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit and improving with age I bought these boots after advice from a stockist who recommended going a whole size down. I have worn worn these for almost 2 years and they have shaped perfectly to my foot. The patina is still developing. A word of advice...don’t apply mink oil to these as they darken the leather and you lose the right copper look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent looks, feel and comfort. The breaking in was longer than expected, did buy half size smaller and glad I did as the boot conforms well to the foot and a larger boot would have made for an easier initial period but I feel the boot wouldn’t have take the shape so accurately. One note of discomfort was that one of the top speed hooks was scratching my ankle; little coaxing with a hammer resolved the matter. If the material used for the speed hooks was a little sturdier it would be appreciated as these bend way too easily. Overall a great boot that feels great and looks even better. Will get myself a pair of Mocs too as the brand is up to my standards. Paid good dollars but got my moneys worth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great craftsmanship Great boot but wasn't sure if the breaking in process included getting my heel to sit firmly on the foot bed . it eventually sat perfectly just as I was hoping

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Favorite I’ve had these boots for a year and I’d say it took me about six months to break them, alternating between them and my 8085.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from lacks support , rock hard feel I've had my Iron rangers for about 3 years now and they are completely broken in. What the marketing info states about the footbed slowly forming to a custom fit is wishfull thinking. I hardly ever wear them anymore because they are so unforgiving. It feels like im wearing wooden shoes. With high quality footbeds like Superfeet that improve arch support they are slightly more tolerable but still rock hard under foot. My only suggestion would be to use a cushion insert or Gel insert but those just make my feet hot. So if you wear em to church once a week or out on the town you'll probably like them. They are well made and good looking but for all day wear they will leave you crying.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lasted one month My father in law bought me these for my wedding I wore them in England on our honeymoon shortly after our return noticed a very deep crease in the toe in which turned into a one inch tear Really disappointing always heard redwings were good but one month not so much

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boots! This is my second pair of Iron Rangers. My 8111 is with me for 2 years now and i love them so much. They've been with me all over the world and keep looking better with age. Two weeks ago i bought an 8083 Hawthorne Muleskinner and i'm so impressed (again). While the leather feels a little bit thicker than my Amber Harness 8111, the break-in is going much smoother and easier (or maybe i'm just simply used to it by now). I wore them around the house for a few hours and already felt the leather started working with my feet while it warmed up. Obviously it is going to take quite a bit of time for the leather footbed and cork underneath to mould to my feet (i have a great example of that with my 8111s). I am really looking forward to the whole process anyway. After owning these boots for a few years now i can give my highest recommendation, but be nice to them - give them time to dry between wears (especially when you use them for many hours throughout the day), and don't forget to condition them every once in a while (leather footbed inside needs to be conditioned to stay supple and prevent cracking). Put simply - I'm a Red Wing guy for life!
