STYLE NO. 8119 : Iron Ranger

The rugged 6-inch 8119 Iron Ranger features premium Oxblood Mesa leather, bronze hardware, speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction, triple stitched quality, plus a durable Vibram® 430 Mini-lug sole for grip while maintaining the classic Iron Ranger construction and silhouette.

The early history of iron mining on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range is intertwined with that of Red Wing Shoe Company. The miners needed tough but comfortable boots that could stand up to the long days and tough conditions a northern Minnesota mine pit presented. Red Wing responded with a boot made of thick leather with an oil resisting outer sole, speed lacing hooks, and a comfortable cork midsole. The defining characteristic of these boots though, was their double layered toe, capped to protect the miner’s feet from injury as they labored with hand tools and heavy machinery. That boot is still made today, the fittingly named Iron Ranger, and it represents not only Red Wing’s commitment to making boots for working men and women but also its Minnesota origins.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for oil-tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 108+ year history.

STYLE NO. 8119 : Iron Ranger

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the Full Grain Leather upper, Leather footboard and Cork Midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8119 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes
  • Should be sized up ½ if used with a footbed or orthotic

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing shoe, but they run way big on me What a shoe. You can tell the craftsmanship that goes into each pair of these. I ordered 3 pairs to make sure the sizing was correct. The 7 that I thought would be perfect turned out to resemble a clown shoe on my foot. The 6.5 fit well, but there were definite pressure points and walking hurt my feet just a little bit. To my amazement I put my foot into the 6 to find a perfect fit. Sure they are a little stiff out of the box, but these things feel like the real deal. I ordered the Vibram sole and see these being my go to boots for the long, high mountain Colorado winters. Expedited shipping was incredibly fast as well. Good job Red Wing. You guys are doing everything right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully Made Boot! I Love My 8119 Boot. I usually wear a Size 13 Wide but I Was Fitted at a Red Wing Store and a Size 12D Fit Perfect. There was no Leather imperfections. Nice Deep Oxblood Color. There was No Leather Scratches. The Stitching was Perfect. The Leather is Thick but Soft. I Bought Red Wing's New Leather Cream to Use. I Put one Coat On before I wore them. I would not use any Other Products on the Leather. The Use and too much Use of Leather Oil will Darken the Leather and Make the Leather too Soft and Will Lose its Scape.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great classic boots Really pleased with these Iron Ranger - Amber Harness. First day of wearing and they are fine. Thin socks, so I ordered a UK 9 instead of my usual UK 10. Just perfect ! Calne Motorbike Festival, UK tomorrow, just brilliant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heard nothing but great things about Red Wings... As a lover of vintage apparel, I finally got to purchase my first pair of Red Wings, choosing the 8113 Rangers for their style and rugged elegance. I'd heard they were a tough boot to break in but after wearing them around the house for a day, I decided they were comfortable enough to wear on a day trip to London. I normally wear a UK size 10 and purchased a UK 10 which ran a touch loose but with a thicker sock turned out to be perfect! They certainly received some favourable attention from my fashionable friends in the pub!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Oxblood Mesa I was a little unsure of these when I first tried them on, as I originally planned on the 1907, but after a passerby customer said "those are the ones" I knew they would be a great match for me and my style. These work well in formal and everyday settings, especially with the Vibram sole. I'm surprised that more reviewers aren't rating these as running big lengthwise... they are huge! Actually, the slider for Length flip-flops from the page where you write your review to the preview page, yikes! Someone at Red Wing Shoes should fix that maybe? Basically, it feels like clown shoes when I don't wear thicker socks. I always wear a 42.5 EU. I tried on their 9 (42 EU) and seemed fine. Later, I realized I should have gone at least a 1/2 size, probably a full size! However, I got an amazing price as these were 2nd productions. Get fitted by the staff in store if possible!\ These boots have survived nicely in their first MN winter, with exposure to salt and the elements. Oxblood Mesa conditions amazingly with mink oil. Their first conditioning was 5 months in and have returned to looking brand new, after looking fairly weathered from almost daily usage the past winter. Wow!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Rolls Royce of Boots. Harley Davidson is the Cadilac of American Bikes, Triumph Motorcycles are the Rolls Royce of English bikes. Iron Rangers are the Rolls Royce and Cadilac of Boots combined, FACT !! There are many boots to choose from in this world but if you factor in History, Heritage and experience to create quality not many manufacturers can boast this like Red Wing can.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Sole Added! I'm happy to see Red Wing Shoes has added a more stable sole to this boot! I have the smooth sole style and have fallen many times on snow and ice because of such lack of traction. The boot now looks to be more season universal! Aside from that traction issue on the other sole style. I love these boots!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Boots. But Purple... I have only just hit the point with these boots that they feel really good when I put them on. It took about 2 weeks of wearing them almost every day, with some long walks around town; then one broken blister on top of my left foot. I took 2 weeks off to let that blister heal, and when I put them back on, they felt great. I can't speak to the durability yet. I'll get back to you in a few years! They do decent in the snow, but it depends on the temps. In some snow, they're worthless. But that's ok. They weren't meant as winter boots. My only criticism: They are purple. In certain light, just straight up PURPLE. Especially direct sunlight. In some light, they look like they do in the photo on this site. But don't be fooled. Unless I got some pair that someone messed up on the dye, they're a solid purple in some light. Probably they're purple in more kinds of light than the nice reddish brown in the photo. Kind of disappointing for me. I wasn't looking to make THAT kind of fashion statement. They're JUST un-purple enough that I can feel ok wearing them out. But definitely know that if you buy them. I would not have bought this color if I could have gotten the Vibram mini-lug sole in any other color, but this is the ONLY color they offer it in. But had I known they would have this purple shade, I would have either gone with Beckams, or maybe custom ordered the Iron Rangers with the same sole the Beckams have. I feel like I made a pretty major compromise, buying boots in what isn't exactly my favorite color (Oxblood. I prefer more of a dark brown), but I liked it enough, and felt I needed the lugged sole, so I was ok with the compromise. But had I known there would be any purple tinge, much less a full-on purple color in most light, I would have bought something else... Oh well. I really like these boots. But there are times I look at them and think "I cannot wear these out! They're purple!". Nothing wrong with purple boots, per se. Just not on me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Although they cost a small fortune, they are worth every penny! I first was introduced with Red Wing in Leuven, Belgium, me an my roommates went there for the weekend. This city is small so it is possible to see all the highlights in one weekend. And so we did, after a couple of walks my feet were sore like H. When I complained about my 'walking shoes' being totally rubbish my roommate showed me his footwear. He was wearing an awesome brown leather shoe. I quote him, 'When I turned 18 my dad came to me and told me that, now I have become fully grown up, a real man needs real boots. So we went to Amsterdam.' That is were he bought his Beckmans Cigar colour. I thought they looked awesome and more important; They were handmate and great quality footwear. After he told me the price I was astonished. I had never bought shoes that I expected to wear for more than one year. So I talked to my dad and he told me to do it. So after saving up for a month or three I was finally ready for my first pair of Red Wings. After trying some different sizes and in-sole combinations, I ended up with a size 8,5 Iron Ranger in Amber Harness (8111). I wear a medium size in-sole, because my feet are overly flat. So therefore I had some spare space to fill up. The first week of breaking in was, to be honest, pretty heavy. My feet ached the first days, but after that week my shoes started to accept me I guess. The following month I wore my IR's five days per week, which resulted in a pair of boots that are now perfectly formed to my feet. I try to wear them in all occasions so I beat them up pretty good. The guy who helped me choose my best fitting pair of IR's told me to only condition them twice a year. I am reading tons of reviews where people condition their boots every two months or so, as I mentioned already I am not experienced with leather boots so I have no idea what method of conditioning is preferred. Apart from that I am very happy with my IR's they look awesome in combination with almost every pair of trousers so that is nice. I hope they will age well and I am already looking for my second pair. I think I will go for the 875 Moc Toe. An aged 875 looks great! If you have any questions or tips for me feel free to comment!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Red Wing for the rest of my days! Best boot I have ever worn, they take some time to break in but what a great boot. I will being buying a pair of the beckman in black and I am set. These Iron Rangers look great dressed up, or down, I get compliments all the time on them. I am a heavy walker in my personal life, and at work. I am always moving, and these boots make my back, feet, knees, and legs feel good. Red Wing - Please don't ever stop making these boots! Most importantly don't ever stop making your boots in America!!! It's important to me, and it's important to everyone else that wears Red Wings. All of my colleagues, and friends are Red Wings guys. They LOVE that these boots are made here! Yes, they are a lot of money, but you get what you pay for!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Looking Boot - Non-slip Sole I was looking for a pair of boots with a lugged sole for winter use, but wanted a pair that was easy to take off and on (frequent flyer). The Iron Ranger line is great, except that until the 8119 they all had smooth cork soles. The 8119 added a nice Vibram sole and the Oxblood color - they look good with jeans and khakis, and I have aslo worn them with a suit and dress pants - and they did not look at all out of place. Fit was slightly larger than the Beckman Oxfords that I own - the boots are one half size smaller and fit perfectly. Break in was actually quicker than the Beckman's - likely due to the Vibram sole versus the leather sole on the oxfords.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A welcome addition to the Iron Ranger collection Having already a pair of the harness leather Iron Ranger and the Rough Out McQueen boot once I saw the Vibram sole used on the new Oxblood 8119 winter now looks very welcome!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough in the beginning, indispensable later. It took some weeks to break them in, and there are differences between right and left shoe, but now these are the best, most comfortable boots I ever had. Would buy again if these disintegrate, which will not happen soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, functional boots. While slightly treacherous in ice and/or more than a half inch of snow, these cork soles get a solid grip on wet surfaces. They take quite a while to break in, but the comfort is impossible to beat once they're there. On several occasions, these boots have taken me in a single day from Union Square to the Upper East Side and back home again--nearly a nine mile walk! I have had these boots for 5 years and it seems reasonable to expect that I'll have them for the rest of my life. I recommend buying true to size; even though they certainly do run large, it's advantageous to fill the gap between foot and shoe with very thick socks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite pair of red wing boots By far my favourite pair Out of the 4 I own. Comfortable, great looking pair of boots. Wear them to the office, the bar and when visiting music festivals here I am on my feet all day. Should come with leather laces though, the ones they come with don't do these bad boys justice!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good everywhere boot I bought a pair for my job which requires both office meetings in formal dress and a lot of trips across Asia. This pair is tough, comfort and fits all my needs. No matter where am I, it looks good and cool both at work and after work. It allows me to travel light as well, there is no need to bring another pair of shoes for after work activities when I'm travelling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very nicely made boot A style that's immediately "known" and accepted, very well crafted with a comfortable fit. If it had been given a leather sole, it would be perfect! In all honesty, I prefer these to my handmade (on lasts) shoes.
