STYLE NO. 8083 : Iron Ranger

The rugged 6-inch 8083 Iron Ranger features premium Hawthorne Muleskinner leather, chrome hardware, speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction, triple stitched quality, plus a durable Vibram® 430 Mini-lug sole for grip while maintaining the classic Iron Ranger construction and silhouette.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

The early history of iron mining on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range is intertwined with that of Red Wing Shoe Company. The miners needed tough but comfortable boots that could stand up to the long days and tough conditions a northern Minnesota mine pit presented. Red Wing responded with a boot made of thick leather with an oil resisting outer sole, speed lacing hooks, and a comfortable cork midsole. The defining characteristic of these boots though, was their double layered toe, capped to protect the miner’s feet from injury as they labored with hand tools and heavy machinery. That boot is still made today, the fittingly named Iron Ranger, and it represents not only Red Wing’s commitment to making boots for working men and women but also its Minnesota origins.

Roughout leather is a reverse suede leather made in our S.B. Foot tannery. Roughout leather is a reverse suede leather made in our S.B. Foot tannery.

Roughout Leather

Roughout leather is created using a reverse-suede technique at our very own S.B. Foot Tanning Co. While most tanneries split, thin and weaken the hide to create the rough suede surface, we simply use the other side of the hide. By doing so, we avoid splitting or thinning our full-grain hides. This makes our Roughout leather just as strong and durable as our other leathers.

STYLE NO. 8083 : Iron Ranger

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the full grain leather upper, leather footboard and cork midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8083 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Many customers buy Red Wing Heritage footwear 1/2 size smaller than their normal size
  • Trying on Red Wing Heritage footwear in a store is recommended to get the perfect fit
  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great American Made product. One of thevmost important things for me is that this product is nade in the USA. So far im not done breaking in the boots, but i like what i feel about the boots so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These I love these boots. They can take a beating but still clean up nicely. I find that the boots work great for everyday (or most days) wear while also being easy to polish up with some mink oil to dress up for a less casual scenario. They take a while to really break in, which eases my mind to know that these are going to last a while. If you find them "uncomfortable" at first, power through. Let the leather insoles really mold to you and the leather uppers get a little less stuff. It'll be worth the effort, because you'll be rewarded with an awesome pair of boots for basically the rest of your life.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lovely Boots; Excellent Craftsmanship; NOT Work Boots I don't normally write reviews of ANYthing, but felt compelled to do so in this instance so here we go. I'll start from the beginning. I was in search of a multi purpose, all day comfort, nice looking unlined leather boot for awhile. Read countless (raving) reviews of this particular boot and decided to give it a go, thinking that my money would be well spent. Can't tell you how many accounts I read stating that "these are the most comfortable boots I've ever worn". After owning these for a year, I feel dramatically mislead. If these are the most comfortable boots you've EVER worn, sorry, but you need to get out more. I don't need to tell you that these are are on the high end of the price spectrum, you already know that. Purchased them in store and I do feel that I got a a great fit accordingly (full size down). Break in period was BRUTAL. Like I was ready to throw the towel in after week 3-4. Could only wear them for half days before tapping out and changing into my comfy work boots. Nevertheless, stuck it out and they did finally start to get better. Still have issues with pressure points in the bunion region of the boots, but its tolerable. What is NOT tolerable is the underfoot cushioning, which is the crux of this whole review basically. If you're buying these boots for nights out, dinner dates, weddings, grocery getting, etc, awesome. Buy em. You won't find a better looking, better crafted, more attention grabbing boot out there. If you're actually planing on doing stuff in these, i.e. working on concrete all day, hiking, general all day multi-purpose wear, look elsewhere. There are plenty of more comfortable alternatives. I naively bought these thinking that they'd be a do-all, end-all boot for me. Just don't want someone to make the same expensive mistake as me. If you like the way they look, are a casual boot wearer, and have the dough to spend, absolutely buy them. Just don't mistake them for a comfortable everyday boot. Some may argue that sizing up and adding a cushioning insole makes these comfortable for all day use. I wouldn't know, since theres no way I am going to shell out another $300+ for a larger size just to test this theory. I'd argue that a truly comfortable shoe/boot does not need an auxiliary insole to make it so. Just my opinion though of course. Hope this helps.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sole wears out faster than normal, I bought it in February 2018 and may be I have used it 14 times, and drive more than walk in Nashville Tennessee. The vibram sole wears out faster, What if I wore it 8hrs a day for 40 a week, I would be changing the sole in 3 months. Always have 2or 3 pairs of the same shoes to look at before you buy. I bought 2 pairs, the iron ranger and beckman round, I just got to look at one and make my decision. Now I regret it, Anyways expensive shoes, I don’t think they make them like what it used to be and sounded like back 20 yrs, Or 40 yrs, Good luck with your boots

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just buy them. You won't regret it. Redwing fan here. I own three pair-copper iron rangers, hawthorne iron rangers and black beckman. These are high quality boots. I love that they're made in America. I refuse to send my dollars to China... Bought one size smaller than my normal and toughed out the break-in for a few days. Now they're so comfortable! I alternate wearing the three pair to let them thoroughly dry out and put shoe trees in them. I expect to have many years of good use out of these! Yeah, they're pricey, but if you do the math, in the long run they're a very good buy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boot , great look. I have been on the fence about buying the red wing iron rangers 8085 for awhile now. if you are on the same boat, do it. I like the boots and have been wearing my pair for almost a week straight now. I wear size 11 in athletic shoes and I wear size 11 in the iron rangers. your best bet is to go into a red wing store and get fitted. the looks are awesome and if you are looking for something different from what other people are wearing , get the iron rangers, you will definitely stand out in the crowd. there is something nostalgic about these boots and when you wear the boots, you feel the quality and craftsmanship the minute you step into a pair. I've received numerous compliments on my 8085s. whatever outfit you are wearing; jeans and a t-shirt or khakis and a flannel, these iron rangers will complete your look. I've worn boots before, so the break in for me is good. make sure you are wearing good, medium cushioned socks and your feet will be fine. I've walked about 1-2 miles per day in the iron rangers with no issues. I did not put any insoles in the boot and I can start to feel the boot mold to my feet. the vibram sole was excellent traction in rain or whatever urban environment you may encounter. my next pair will probably be the mule skin leather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An American classic! These are simply amazing boots. The toe cap adds some flare to the classic styling of this boot. The Copper Rough & Tough leather upper looks great right out of the box, but will age and wear beautifully. The Goodyear welt construction allows it to be resoled for years to come. Great traction from the updated Vibram mini lug outsole makes it more comfortable from day one. Looks great with jeans or khakis; dressed up or down. Sizing can be tricky since these run large, so definitely size down from your regular athletic shoe size. Also, remember these are leather and will stretch out some with wear and form to your foot over time. For reference, I wear a size 10 in Reeboks and Vans; 9D in Ariat boots and Chucks; and 10.5 in Salomon and Merrells. I ended up going with a size 9D (which fits like a glove), after trying both 9 and 9.5. I could easily wear both, but opted for the smaller size since they’ll stretch some. I also wanted to wear regular socks (vs heavy wool socks) with them and wear the laces looser. I’ve got room for my toes to wiggle; about a thumbs width (1/2”) distance from the front of the boot; and it fits comfortably snug width wise. A lot of reviewers have reported a long break-in period, however, I have not experienced that in my case. Once I got the right size, these have been extremely comfortable right out of the box; even after 10+ hours of wear. YMMV.
