STYLE NO. 8146 : Roughneck

Modeled after Red Wing’s original work boot style, the 8146 is a 6-Inch Moc Toe featuring Briar Oil Slick leather, Vibram Lug outsole, triple stitched quality and Goodyear welt construction.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

In the mid-20th century, those men who wrenched on oil rigs had one of the most dangerous occupations around, earning them the nickname, “roughnecks.” The 8146 was inspired by these workers and built just as tough, with a 6-inch height for support and protection, thick, durable leathers and a heavily lugged sole for grip on any surface.

Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather. Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for Oil-Tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-Tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 110+ year history.

STYLE NO. 8146 : Roughneck

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the full grain leather upper, leather footboard and cork midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8146 is built using the No. 23 Last:

  • Was created in the 1950s and is Red Wing’s most iconic last
  • Includes extra room in the forefoot and instep for easy entry
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes
  • Most customers buy Red Wing Heritage footwear 1/2 size smaller than their normal size
  • Trying on Red Wing Heritage footwear in a store is recommended to get the perfect fit

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Vibram Sole Detaching at Toes I got these boots at Christmas and they have had very little use until the last few weeks doing spring yard work. I really like the boots and they fit well but the soles are both separating at the toes. there is a thin black piece between the welt and the sole and they are separating on both sides of the thin black piece. I will try to glue them but I shouldn't have to fix basically new boots that cost this much. I would return them under warranty but got them as a present and don't have a receipt. It is a real shame as they were exactly what I was wanting and are my first pair of Red Wings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is what a boot is supposed to be I have been checking this boot out online for a few weeks as I need a boot with deep lugs but not many Red Wing Store stock them I found them about three hours from my home as I happened to be passing by the Berkley MI Red Wing Store, the staff was great Jacob fit me and the store manager also helped us , I didn't catch her name but she was very nice and they were both very knowledgeable with the Red Wing Boots and products, I tried on a size 9 with a large leather footbed but that was to large so we switched to a medium foot bed and it was perfect, its always a debate but I did not size down I thought my 9 was still the best fit, Jacob applied some leather cream and the boots looked handsome! The were inspected by Sherry 065203, I was slightly surprised as the were made in 06-16 but I inspected them and they looked perfect, the Briar Slick Oil leather looked amazing, all the stitching was great and the boots were symmetrical, my next hope is Red Wing will offer a insulated Heritage boot in the USA, I live in the snow for a few months of the year and I'm surprised one is not offered, the only downside to buying these is I passed up the Blacksmith in Black Prairie leather so that's on my list for the next Red Wing purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Winter Boots Hard to break in, but it is an excellent pair of boots against the snow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent addition to my Red Wing boot collection! Very pleased that I purchased this booked. Great quality an excellent craftsmanship. I love the leather the weight and the balance of this boot. I can see that it will take a bit of breaking in, but it is certainly much more comfortable out of the box compared to other red wing boots that I have. In addition, I had to size down one half size. This is consistent with all of the other 23 last boots that I own. This is a great looking boot that will look good with both jeans and chinos. With proper care, these re-craftable boots will last you a lifetime. I am looking forward to it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Addition To My Red Wing Collection So happy that I purchased this boot. Great color and craftsmanship. I love the lug vibram sole ... Very stylish. Good weight and balance. This boot will take some break in time, but much more comfortable out of the box than other Red Wing boots. Sizing for me was a 1/2 size down, as with all my 23 last boots. Great looking boot with both jeans and chinos. With proper care these re-craftable boot will last for years to come. I'm looking forward to it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A trusted companion Easily the very best shoe I have ever owned. As many others have stated, the shoes have a break-in-period. The Vibram sole looks and feels amazing and provided that they are quite popular, any shoemaker will replace them for you when that time comes. That was one of the reasons that I chose these boots: longevity, durability and service. The boots will develop a nice and unique patina, although I cannot say that I have developed any myself as I have used them quite carefully. The first thing I do after taking them off is to brush off any excess dirt. Also, using the All Natural Leather Conditioner made the leather darken and look completely new again. I often get compliments on these from friends, colleagues and even bypassers in the streets. I can say that I am just as impressed as they are when I explain that they are in fact not new.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great winter boot! I own three pairs of Red Wing Heritage boots and these were by far the hardest to break in, but with some patience and time they will conform to your foot and feel great when you put them on. Traction in the snow is great. I used Nature Seal on them the first day I bought them and highly recommended this for these boots. Same great Red Wing Heritage quality that I’ve come to expect and have no doubt that these will serve me well for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exact boot & great quality I remember from 1970s Have had this pair now for two years and love them; just as I did as a teenager in the backwoods of northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. It will take a couple of weeks to break them in to conform to your foot and then they will fit like moccasins. Never stop making them!
