STYLE NO. 8064 : Merchant

The Merchant is built on the same last as the Blacksmith, but it achieves a slimmer profile and lower toe profile by forgoing a toe box. The 8064 in Amber Harness leather is built with a three-quarter Goodyear welt and Puritan triple stitch construction, atop a Chemigum outsole, used with Red Wing work boots since 1964.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

When Red Wing Shoe Company was founded in 1905, streets were still muddy, travel was still largely by train or horse-drawn and daily life a little more demanding. So footwear had to be versatile—even a shop owner or banker needed shoes that could keep feet safe and dry but brush off and look good while doing business. The Merchant is a direct descendant of those earliest boots we made, like the style 245 from 1920.

Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather. Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for Oil-Tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-Tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 110+ year history.

STYLE NO. 8064 : Merchant

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the Full Grain Leather upper, Leather footboard and Cork Midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8064 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Many customers buy Red Wing Heritage footwear 1/2 size smaller than their normal size
  • Trying on Red Wing Heritage footwear in a store is recommended to get the perfect fit
  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first Red Wing product and my first pair of service boots I spent many hours researching service boots online, and what drew me most to the olive Merchant is its appearance. It can easily be worn casually, socially, or on the jobsite. This is my first Red Wing product, and I'm very impressed with the leather and workmanship. A few things about sizing: I wear an 8.5 or a 9, depending on the brand, and am medium width. I purchased an 8 in this shoe, and after wearing them for two days, I could've gone down to a 7.5. In other words, I recommend downsizing one full size from your standard non-Red Wing shoe size. My only complaints are as follows: -The shoe laces are too short, so I ordered 54" from Amazon. -There are two local brick & mortar Red Wing stores within a 30 minute drive of me. After visiting one of the two stores, I learned that neither stocks the Merchant line. The salesperson recommended I try on the Iron Ranger for a sample fit; other than that, he wasn't familiar with the Heritage line (he told me it was new), and was of no additional assistance. After I left the store, I called Red Wing customer service, and spoke to a fantastic agent. She advised me on sizing, and said the store salesperson could've ordered the sizes I wanted to try (this isn't a reflection on the product, but I was disappointed with my in-store experience). Overall, I'm enjoying my Merchants, and plan to order another pair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and underrated Beautiful and underrated boot. Love Iron Rangers but this boot is more versatile and comfortable. In fact, it’s very comfortable; didn’t take long to break in. Nicer looking than some better known boots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would buy again, but won't have to I baught the "ebony" version and was sceptical on a black boot. It's not black, it's a really rich chocolate brown color and reds are starting to come through. I wear these with a nice sock (Darn Tough Vermomt if you're curious) and it's literally the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn! Been in them for over a month (daily) and I don't see that changing anytime soon. They do run narrow but that works for me. I wear a natural 14 but the 13 fits perfectly. Buy them, wear them, just brush them off with a horse hair brush (since the oil tanned leather is hefty) and you're good for a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classy and versatile boot! I ordered these in July and have been wearing them almost daily since. They are extremely comfortable and the sole grips well and has surprisingly good shock absorption. Reliable and long lasting footwear is important to me. I work in an office abroad and I cannot worry about buying new footwear, so it is important that my footwear won't fail me. I know I can rely on these boots for many years to come. They are a little narrow and run at least half a size short. I would recommend these to anyone who wants a piece of footwear that can look classy in the office and casual and rugged in bluejeans.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful boots, not as dark in color as the name implies! I've only had my Ebony Harness Merchants for a few days but I am in love with these boots. The look is slightly more refined than my Iron Rangers and the lack of a cap toe gives them a little slimmer profile, so I look forward to wearing them with chinos in a casual office environment. The leather is a gorgeous dark chocolate brown, with rusty reddish undertones that are just beginning to show through. Definitely not black, as you might expect in a leather described as "ebony". The fit for my size 10 D's is great, very similar to my Iron Rangers in the same size (I am a size 11 on a Brannock device). Knowing they were built on the same last gave me the confidence to order these online. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have a slightly taller foot Great shoes, great construction; greatly sad that my foot doesn't work with this last/design. My right foot is imperceptibly taller in the instep and as a result, it really messes with the fitting On the Brannock device I measure a 9D. I bought these in a 7.5D and the length provides me with at least a 3/5 inch of space to spare, and the width is great, but the height of the vamp clamps down so tightly it causes some bruising. I've attached a picture so you can see where it bites down. Forewarning : my foot doesn't look very nice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good higher class boot I wear usually iron Rangers, but decided to pick these up for a more going out shoe, a touch upgrade in class. Looks fantastic and fits like a glove. Same last as Rangers and so expected to fit the same. Break in was actually shorter than Rangers, 3-4 days. Have it for a month now and no issues.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great dress-up boot. Wish it had speed hooks for laces at top. Great boot. Beautiful leather, looks even better in person. Distinctive sole. Looks great with jeans, but not over-dressy. I really like the toe box. I wish it had "speed hook" eyelets at top three eyelets....it is harder to put on than the equivalent Iron Ranger or Blacksmith boot.
