STYLE NO. 2942 : Roughneck

Famous for its clean lines, simple construction and classic round toe styling, the 2942 features Copper Rough & Tough leather, a durable Vibram Lug outsole, triple stitched quality and Goodyear welt construction.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

In the mid-20th century, those men who wrenched on oil rigs had one of the most dangerous occupations around, earning them the nickname, “roughnecks.” The 8146 was inspired by these workers and built just as tough, with a 6-inch height for support and protection, thick, durable leathers and a heavily lugged sole for grip on any surface.

Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather. Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for Oil-Tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-Tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 110+ year history.

STYLE NO. 2942 : Roughneck

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the Full Grain Leather upper, Leather footboard and Cork Midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 2942 is built using the No. 23 Last:

  • Was created in the 1950s and is Red Wing’s most iconic last
  • Includes extra room in the forefoot and instep for easy entry
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes
  • Most customers buy Red Wing Heritage footwear 1/2 size smaller than their normal size

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great winter boot! I own three pairs of Red Wing Heritage boots and these were by far the hardest to break in, but with some patience and time they will conform to your foot and feel great when you put them on. Traction in the snow is great. I used Nature Seal on them the first day I bought them and highly recommended this for these boots. Same great Red Wing Heritage quality that I’ve come to expect and have no doubt that these will serve me well for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exact boot & great quality I remember from 1970s Have had this pair now for two years and love them; just as I did as a teenager in the backwoods of northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. It will take a couple of weeks to break them in to conform to your foot and then they will fit like moccasins. Never stop making them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One tough boot Been wearing these boots daily now for four years. Resoled two times. They will go another four years. Absolute he$$ to break in but once you do the pain will be worth it. I work in the construction industry in Colorado. They have been through the mud the snow and to the top of mountains. They are heavy but easy to get used to. I am about to buy another pair of heritage boots not because I need them but afraid they might not make these again. If you want a heavy duty boot that feels like heaven once broken in and will last forever then buy these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from one tough boot Have owned some Redwings in the past & glad to get a new pair for chapter 2 (3?) of outdoor work. These have a sturdy feel and the fit is tight in the ankles (which is support also), and I have narrow feet. I wear a 9, sized down to 8.5 after reading comments here-perfect fit with mid weight wool socks. I put an arch support in - there is no cushy footbed here. I'd say at my age, and based on the superb workmanship, this will be my last pair...I'd like to see a loop on the back to help get them on. Stiff, but sure they will break in. A classic handsome & useful boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Now a great boot This is my third pair of Red Wing boots, which I purchased for the coming winter. I have a pair of IR 8114 in the same size and feel that the the 8146 runs a bit smaller and the fit was snug at first. These are taking longer to break in than the IRs too. The briar oil slick is a lovely rich colour and should develop a nice patina. I did however have a problem with the right boot causing a pain in my ankle bone. On close inspection of the boots I noticed the tongue gusset connects up at the second lace hold. I compared this with my IR and Coopers which have the gusset connect around the third lace hole, these boots do not cause any pain. I decided to modify the gusset of the 8146 as per the other boots by removing a small section of leather, following the seam line on the lace side and continued the curve on the gusset. I ended up with four small v shaped pieces of leather about 12mm long, as I did both boots to match. I have been wearing the boots now without any problems or pain, so now very happy with these boots and I believe they will probably out last me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the best experience This is no diss at the quality and craftsmanship of redwings. I happen to have bought the wrong size and I didn’t like the vibrant sole. It was heavy. Wasn’t slip resistance and I felt like lugging around a 10 pound bag of weight on my legs. If the size was right and had slip resistance then. I would recommend this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My New Favorite Pair of Boots! Absolutely in love with this style. Now I know there are a few people out there who aren't fond of the sole, but I am. It has sooo much grip and I think it looks killer. I'm a size 8 in Nikes, Adidas, New Balances, etc. I grabbed a 7D from a site since that's the only size they had at the time. It's has a touch of wiggle wiggle room at the toes so I believe a 6.5 would fit perfect. No worries, thicker socks and I'm good to go. The leather is thick and feels like quality. It scratches/scuffs up very nicely in this color. A quick brush before and after and they look amazing. The boots give a nice, heavy feel when walking but not too overbearing. As for the insole, it's leather and little rough at first but not too uncomfortable. Once they fully break in, I'm sure they're be like walking on clouds. I highly recommend this style! I just ordered a pair of Blacksmiths and I can't wait to try those out as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong boot Bought this boot as a multipurpose boot. Plan was to use it as a summer yard work boot, do some hiking on a trip through the national parks, and have as a descent looking “dress boot” to wear out with jeans. I have been pleased on all fronts. Excellent quality and craftsmanship, looks great and I love wearing it. Tough, durable for work around the house and comfortable enough to hike in. I did several 2-4 mile hikes in them on mountains and they were great. Any more than that and I would want more of a hiking boot, but these did great on shorter distances. Love this boot for the purposes that I am using it. Cleans up great with some oil after heavy use. Did take a bit to break in, but not difficult. I felt good with them after about 6 hours of wear.
