STYLE NO. 3343 : Blacksmith

The Blacksmith is a boot beloved for its highly wearable, everyday versatility. A sleek, smooth toe leads the way, and solid brass eyelets and Flat Waxed laces are every bit as durable as they are dignified.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

Versatile and reliable, this style of shoe was originally used in farm fields and blacksmith workshops during the day before being cleaned and shined up for a night out on the town. The extra height of this 6-inch style, which would have protected feet and ankles from hot cinders at the forge, still keeps out snow in the winter and dirt in the summer, and its last-built construction keeps feet comfortable even after long hours of work.

Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather. Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for Oil-Tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-Tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 110+ year history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boot for the office and the field! I needed a solid boot that would look great in the office but also be tough enough to go out on the job site. I did some research, both online and off, and I came into the Red Wing store interested in the Iron Ranger 8083 or 8084. But once I saw the 3345 Blacksmiths, I didn't want the toe cap anymore. I still like the look of the Iron Rangers, but I am really enjoying my 3345's. I can't wait to see how these boots will age. I've already taken them camping and they worked well in the mountains too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine Quality Leather and Traditional Design Make for a Rugged Casual Boot I went to my neighborhood Red Wing store, and had nearly fully decided upon the Blacksmith, with perhaps some variability regarding the type or color of leather. I bought the Copper Rough and Tough, in size 10, my normal size, after stepping on the digital measuring station, and have enjoyed this boot immensely. I knew there would be break-in, but frankly it was not bad, being mostly broken in after a week of irregular wear (roughly 4 hours at a time). I WAS able to wear the boot all day when needed. One needs to be aware that this type of footwear is completely different than modern glued up heavily padded designs. The techniques used to make these are what make these "heritage", thus they are not padded, but rather are like boots of 1910 up to around 1950. The Copper Rough and Tough leather is a "Pull Up" leather, which means that the oils in the tanned leather cause the darkness of color, but a push in the back of the leather will radically lighten the color, meaning that the oil content is heavily involved in the "look" of the leather. This kind of leather could radically darken if one conditions the leather with some types of leather oils. Most minor scuffs can easily be rubbed out by hand, with the inherent oil moving in to darken the scuffed area of leather. My pair of boots looks somewhat darker than it did just a couple of months ago when I bought them. The vibram soles are very rugged. This is entirely a rugged and not 'dressy' boot. I switched the wax cotton laces for leather since it fits the look of this boot quite well. The construction and craftsmanship here is phenomenal. I'd suggest that the workers are extremely experienced, and have great pride in their work. I would imagine this is also true of the tannery operation, which is producing a quality product as well. It is worth mentioning that the entire Red Wing operation is producing dozens of different models of footwear in several product and brand lines. It should be noted that this "type" of boot was very similar to US Army soldiers in 1930's and 1940's would have worn. The only main differences would be in details like military use of the orthopedically accurate Munson last (available in a special run in the Iron Ranger, sold by Amsterdam Red Wing affiliates) and the modern Vibram sole. Coincidentally, Red Wing was a primary boot manufacturer for US Army boots both in WW I, and in WW II. Despite these boots being well above the price level of "economy price", they are, in my opinion clearly worth the price. Please, also realize there are some boot companies which price at far higher prices than the level for these Red Wing Heritage models like the Blacksmith or Iron Ranger.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Blacksmith built like a tank Normally I used to wear 42 (9”) boot size and I pick a 9” blacksmith kinda a touch of roomy. Anyways options wearing tick slice of sock problem solve!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product has great features that include premium leather and triple stitch construction. After purchasing my first pair of boots (Iron Ranger Style No 8084) over a year ago, there was no turning back. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is what really tells the story about this product. I now own the classic Blacksmith Style No 3343 in Copper Rough & Tough Leather and they are truly amazing. I have recommended this product to family and friends for years and will continue to do so. Note: Cleaning products are as good as it gets as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall great boot, great color. These boots age fantastically but do have a tendency to darken if you used RedWings all natural leather cleaner. That being said they darken quite beautifully. When it comes to sizing, its quite unfortunate they dont have any wider sizes. If I know I'm going to be wearing these for a while, I'll wear them around the house so the leather begins to stretch around my feet. The length is another thing. I wear an 8.5 in sneakers and even at a size 7 these boots are still too long. If they had smaller wider boots, this would be a perfect fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really great boots! Not my first Red Wing boots, but my first Blacksmiths. I was hesitant due to the price, however I am glad I bought them! I bought them at a real store, that had a real person to help me with fit. I went with a half size below my normal size and it is a perfect fit. The break in that I expected to be terrible was actually not bad at all, I suspect people who have difficulty breaking in this type of boot may be used to wearing tennis shoes. It was a great to have an expert to assist me at the shoe store. I am so happy with these boots that I just had them order me another pair in a color they didn't have in stock. Thanks to the Red Wing store in Hot Springs Ar!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Go with the size the sales rep says! These boots are unbelievable. I was hesitant to go with such a snug size which the sales rep recommended, but I am glad I did. I would say it took about six months to really break-in to be very comfortable, but I only wear them about 2-3 days/week. I’ve had them for over two years now, and it’s like they were built just for my feet, with they way they have conformed. Could not be happier.
