STYLE NO. 4606 : Iron Ranger

The rugged 6-inch 4606 Iron Ranger web exclusive features premium Ebony Harness leather, chrome hardware, speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction and triple stitched quality. A durable Vibram® 430 Mini-lug sole adds grip while maintaining the classic Iron Ranger construction and silhouette.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

The early history of iron mining on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range is intertwined with that of Red Wing Shoe Company. The miners needed tough but comfortable boots that could stand up to the long days and tough conditions a northern Minnesota mine pit presented. Red Wing responded with a boot made of thick leather with an oil resisting outer sole, speed lacing hooks, and a comfortable cork midsole. The defining characteristic of these boots though, was their double layered toe, capped to protect the miner’s feet from injury as they labored with hand tools and heavy machinery. That boot is still made today, the fittingly named Iron Ranger, and it represents not only Red Wing’s commitment to making boots for working men and women but also its Minnesota origins.

Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather. Oil-Tanned leather is a very durable and vivid leather.

Oil-Tanned Leather

S.B. Foot Tanning Co. is best known for Oil-Tanned leather which is used to build a variety of timeless Red Wing styles. This leather is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and has a more natural look and feel because less finishing materials have been applied, allowing its natural beauty to shine through. Oil-Tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless work boots throughout Red Wing’s 110+ year history.

STYLE NO. 4606 : Iron Ranger

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the Full Grain Leather upper, Leather footboard and Cork Midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 4606 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Many customers buy Red Wing Heritage footwear 1/2 size smaller than their normal size
  • Trying on Red Wing Heritage footwear in a store is recommended to get the perfect fit
  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Received damaged boots First off, these are gorgeous boots, the pictures on the site don't do the copper rough and tough leather justice. I was elated when they arrived and saw how much more vivid the color is on them. Like my previous pair of iron rangers, these fit perfectly. If these are like the Harness Black ones I own, breaking them in should be quick and relatively painless compared to logger boots. Sadly, the right boot is probably a second as there are numerous holes in the outsole and the stitching that is supposed to keep the sole on the boot looks to be coming undone. I'm guessing that the person who attached the outsoles made a mistake and had to redo the stitching but didn't bother getting a new sole and tried to cover it up with what appears to be glue though I doubt it will hold up well to the weather even with the glue they added. I contacted Red Wing several days ago about my problem boots but I've yet to receive a response. It's a shame because I really like how these boots look and was hoping to break them in before a trip next month.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No longer Copper R&T Love the boots however I did my first cleaning using the suggested products that are said not to darken the boots (Foam Leather Cleaner and Boot cream.) Darkened the boots to the point they look like Oxblood Mesa Leather or Amber Harness Leather

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice boots After reading many reviews of these boots, I decided to pull the trigger and pay the hefty price for them. The store manager fitted me and gave me an 11D and I usually roll with 12. A bit tight getting them on initially but the store manager said these boots are like baseball gloves. Gotta be broken in but once they are,... perfection. I’ve worn these boots for one whole weekend now and I’m super impressed with them. Strangely I found that buying replacement laces from red wing that aren’t so stiff has made a massive difference in the comfort during the break in time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The ultimate boot I own 9 pair of Red Wing boots and these are my favorite. Like any boot in the No. 8 last, I wear a full size down(11) from my sneaker size(12). It’s imperative to get fit in the Red Wing store. Each pair of these vary in size and the leather itself. Once I’d decided that I wanted these boots, the salesman brought out several pair for me to try on. Because these are hand made each boot will have its own distinct properties. The pair I chose are perfect for me. Mine were comfortable the day I bought them. There was a couple of hours of stiffness and then I was good to go. With these in my arsenal, I have to force myself to wear other boots. They are so comfort and look so good that I’d wear them every day. I give them a days rest in between wears because I want the leather to rest and retain its shape inside of shoe trees. These could just as easily be my every day boots. I’d wear these for everything except hot construction work or anything where I’m using chemicals. They’d totally last but they’re too beautiful and I don’t want to get them messed up. I own Iron Rangers in Copper and Charcoal Rough and Tough. In my attempt to keep the copper from having to be darkened too much, I’ll wear the charcoal on days that I’ll encounter dirtier situations. These are by far my favorite boots anyone makes. I held out from by these for awhile because I didn’t get what the hype was about. Now I totally understood. Make these the first Red Wings you buy. You’ll inevitably want more (it happens to all of us) but you won’t need to.
