STYLE NO. 8083 : Iron Ranger

The rugged 6-inch 8083 Iron Ranger features premium Hawthorne Muleskinner leather, chrome hardware, speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction, triple stitched quality, plus a durable Vibram® 430 Mini-lug sole for grip while maintaining the classic Iron Ranger construction and silhouette.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

The early history of iron mining on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range is intertwined with that of Red Wing Shoe Company. The miners needed tough but comfortable boots that could stand up to the long days and tough conditions a northern Minnesota mine pit presented. Red Wing responded with a boot made of thick leather with an oil resisting outer sole, speed lacing hooks, and a comfortable cork midsole. The defining characteristic of these boots though, was their double layered toe, capped to protect the miner’s feet from injury as they labored with hand tools and heavy machinery. That boot is still made today, the fittingly named Iron Ranger, and it represents not only Red Wing’s commitment to making boots for working men and women but also its Minnesota origins.

Roughout leather is a reverse suede leather made in our S.B. Foot tannery. Roughout leather is a reverse suede leather made in our S.B. Foot tannery.

Roughout Leather

Roughout leather is created using a reverse-suede technique at our very own S.B. Foot Tanning Co. While most tanneries split, thin and weaken the hide to create the rough suede surface, we simply use the other side of the hide. By doing so, we avoid splitting or thinning our full-grain hides. This makes our Roughout leather just as strong and durable as our other leathers.

STYLE NO. 8083 : Iron Ranger

A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the full grain leather upper, leather footboard and cork midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.

The 8083 is built using the No. 8 Last:

  • Many customers buy Red Wing Heritage footwear 1/2 size smaller than their normal size
  • Trying on Red Wing Heritage footwear in a store is recommended to get the perfect fit
  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best I’ve ever had These boots are the best boots I’ve ever worn. Period. They fit perfectly snug right from the start. They look amazing and perform amazingly well at my retail job. Now even though they fit perfectly and felt good after a few steps, a few more steps after that and the bottom part of my foot around the bunyun started to hurt on both feet. Even the back of my heel hurt as well. Maybe it’s normal foot fatigue from 4+ hours of work, but I’m not going to blame the boot. It’s still breaking in after all. These are what I wear to school, to church, to work, to pretty much anywhere! Thank you Red Wing for probably the only pair of footwear I will ever need!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love to boot The day I got the boot it fit like a glove. It was slightly stiff but fit perfectly. I have had the boot for about a month now and it is starting to really break in. I wear them daily and I would say that they are a great beginner boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite pair of boots Being in the military, I've worn lots of boots. These are my favorites. The copper color on these is absolutely phenomenal, completely unique. Most boots are chromexel because it's faster to produce, but not these. When you wear these boots, you feel like you have a place in history, with all those in the U.S. before you. That's the biggest part of what I love about them. Unlike some of the reviewers, I will tell you they won't be super comfortable in the store. Don't expect them to be, they need to break in, and it takes time. By the end, its worth it. For reference, I wear a size 11 in sneakers, 10.5 in some other shoes. In iron rangers, I'm a 9. If you buy them too loose, they won't break in properly. Just make sure you have adequite room in toe length. I personally prefer the waxed laces on the blacksmith boots, so I bought a set of those laces and they look much better than what comes stock on the iron rangers in my opinion.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wanted to love them When my last pair of work boots finally failed, I was on the hunt for something new, versatile, and built to last. Made in America wasn't a "must" but it would definitely be a plus. Through mounds of research, online and in stores, I had tried on my first pair of Iron Rangers about a year ago before I headed overseas on a tour with the Marines. I hadn't plan on trying them on and while the boots felt amazing on my feet, oddly enough I did not have the socks on that I would typically wear with boots. Knowing I would not need a pair of boots in Okinawa, I told myself it could wait until I returned and I could go back to a Red Wing store and with the proper socks pick out my Iron Rangers. When the opportunity presented itself I was extremely excited to get these boots. Long story, but due to Hurricane Florence my family and I evacuated to Winston-Salem and there just happened to be a Red Wing store. I grabbed a couple kids and off I went. I was a little giddy myself. I don't spend money on me---ever---and I certainly don't buy $300 boots. But when the season changes to fall, I spend all day in my Marine combat boots and any other time in my civilian boots. I figured this was easily a long-term "investment" and I was actually in the "need" of a new pair of boots. The store experience was great. The manager helped me out and was extremely professional. I listened intently as he told me what to expect with these boots. "A firm handshake" he said they should feel like and eventually wear to my foot. I was there for about 40 minutes and literally walked out of the store wearing the boots feeling like a million bucks. Style wise, they are a great looking boot. Rugged yet refined. Easily can tell the high quality construction and I loved the fact it had a Vibram sole. They were in fact tight but as promised they began to loosen up. Unfortunately, this is when I started to worry that I may have made a $300 mistake. As I continue to wear them, the space between the toe cap and the tongue/eyelets is extremely uncomfortable as I walk in my right boot. I guess, more annoying than anything. I would have figured by now that discomfort would have subsided. And let me be clear here that I do not believe this is going to be true with everyone. But for whatever reason, my left boot fits like a glove and my right boot does not want to get on board. In the end, I would still recommend you go try them for yourself. BUT, if you don't feel right in the store, do not purchase. Red Wing's guarantee policy does not cover Iron Rangers so my hope is as I continue to wear them, the discomfort goes away or at least disappates otherwise they are likely to find there way on to eBay.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Long lasting, but quality control is HORRIBLE I’ve had these boots for 2 years and they are holding up just fine. However, the quality control on these are terrible. The left and right boots are drastically different, the toe cap is shorter on one boot, the leather on each boot is a different thickness and color, and the sole and welt was attached crooked on one boot. I paid full price for boots that definitely should have been factory seconds. I wear them because they are comfortable, made in the US, and can be recrafted, but if I could go back, I probably would have purchased a different boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boots I read all the reviews on these boots and was skeptical on them being comfortable but I live in work boots for a living these were comfortable right out of the box I wear them all day long with no problems and buy them a 1/2 size down
