STYLE NO. 3358 : Short Engineer

The 6-inch Short Engineer has all the same features as our taller Engineer boot, with three-quarter Goodyear welt construction, a mini-lug Vibram® sole and hard-wearing nickel buckles but in a more versatile style. Style 3358 features Sand Mohave rough-out leather which adds some texture and refinement to a boot that is every bit as rugged as its historical forebear. Just shorter.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE

Our Engineer boots were originally designed for the namesake railroad men who drove steam locomotives coast to coast but their pull-on simplicity and minimal stitching have made them popular beyond the railyard, with men and women.

Roughout leather is a reverse suede leather made in our S.B. Foot tannery. Roughout leather is a reverse suede leather made in our S.B. Foot tannery.

Roughout Leather

Roughout leather is created using a reverse-suede technique at our very own S.B. Foot Tanning Co. While most tanneries split, thin and weaken the hide to create the rough suede surface, we simply use the other side of the hide. By doing so, we avoid splitting or thinning our full-grain hides. This makes our Roughout leather just as strong and durable as our other leathers.

STYLE NO. 3358 : Short Engineer

A new pair of Red Wing Women's Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. The full grain leather upper, leather covered foam footboard and cork filler create an enduring and customized fit over time, with each wear.

The 3358 is built using the No. 107 Last:

  • Gives shape to our engineer boots
  • Pull-on design, based on the men’s no. 522 last
  • Fits true to size

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect boot! I am a woman in construction, & I must admit, I’m pretty hard on all of my shoes - no leather wrapped heels for me! I previously owned (2) pairs of Red Wings, men’s style no. 2245 (the first pair lasted 10 years before I finally wore through the leather on one of the toes). My second pair was in good shape, but I was wanting a pair of work boots that I could quickly slip on when needed. I have literally been looking for something like these for over a year and I was starting to feel a bit like Goldilocks. I loved these from the first moment I tried them on. They were perfect! I opted for the Copper leather because I felt like that would be the most durable option - especially with our orange Carolina clay! I feared the black would just look scuffed and beat up, whereas the copper doesn’t really show marks. These boots were a bit above my price point, but I lucked out and received them for Christmas! I’ve been wearing them non-stop ever since, and not just to the jobsite. I’m really excited to have a woman’s work boot for the first time, and they look awesome with a pair of jeans. As far as sizing goes, I found these to be very true-to-size. I wear a size 10 in most of my shoes and in all of my boots (I’m occasionally a size 9.5 in some heels). I tried on a size 9.5 and a size 10 in the store and the 10 was perfect. On a side note, the salesman and I were chatting about the durability of these boots, and Red Wings in general, and he stated that with just a little bit of care, they would literally last a lifetime. With my previous experience with my Red Wings, I’m inclined to believe him. And this was not at a Red Wing store, this was at a little shoe store in downtown Raleigh (Man Muir) that is also a genuine cobbler and the only place I trust to do true repairs on my good shoes. All-in-all, if you think this might be what you are looking for, I’d go for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the break in period My 3-4 year search for fall-winter weekend boots has finally ended. I'm dress-and-heels-to-work during the week. Never contemplated buying any shoe this expensive. They're gorgeous, meticulously made, and will last for years and years. Had to size down from 9 to 8.5 due to length. My wide feet rebelled at the narrowness (in both sizes) across wide part of foot. And at the heel slippage. But there is plenty of important toe wiggle room. I almost left store without purchasing....but they called back to me, so I walked around in them as I pondered. The leather began to yield, so I decided to give them a shot and return if need be. Took them home expecting buyers remorse to quickly set in, but the opposite happened. The leather is molding to my feet, and the heel slippage is almost gone as the leather loosens up, gives a bit, and breaks in for my stride. I am in love. These are comfortable, the arch support perfect. A friend who wears his Red Wings every. single. day. all. year. in New England (truth!) says his favorite part is breaking in a new pair. I'm glad I decided to forge through this period to gain a custom fit, which, combined with quality and style, is what I have been searching for. Cannot wait to spend a day trekking around NYC. These are amazing. I'm contemplating another style...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful boots! Super tight across toes/top of foot I ordered the short engineer in size 8, Copper, my normal size. I have had to return them twice. The first pair had a lump under the insole of one boot. Was very uncomfortable. The second pair were Extremely tight across the toes and top of the feet. I wore them in the house for over a week everyday. They loosened up but not enough to keep them. I returned those for a third pair that I just received. Still tight across the toes but a little better if I don't wear socks :( I'm going to wear them in the house for a while to see if they become a better fit after breaking in. I was So excited to Finally be able to order these boots and then to have these issues was a let down. I have tried to find them at my local Red wing stores but no one carries them. I would like to be able to try them on in a store to find the rt fit and size. Maybe a half size larger would solve my issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Boot!!! I purchased this boot in a size 9, I usually wear between an 8.5 and a 9. Fits PERFECTLY. As with any Red Wing boot it takes a few wears to break in. These are by far my favorite boot in my closet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from with Copper Rough and Tough, buy 1/2 size smaller I purchased this boot in a 7 1/2 and in a week it was so large I could kick it off of my foot. I gave those away (lucky girl) and purchased a 7. They were quite tight on my toes and fit snug everywhere else however with my past experience was determined to figure it out. I wore them barefoot 5 or 6 times and they were comfortable even barefoot with the wonderful leathers inside. They broke in amazingly well and now I wear them with light wool socks. Contrary to what I might have expected, even the toes loosed up and they are plenty roomy with no restriction whatsoever. With that knowledge, I purchased the Clara in Black #3405 size 7. Big mistake. This leather does not relax the same. Bummer... Love the boot and love the look, should have purchased a 7.5. Moral of the story, find your local Red Wing Shoe Store, listen to your Red Wing Boot sales person and don't buy on line... It has cost me $$$

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love, Love, Love!!! These boots are spectacular! They are so well-made and I know they will last and last and keep getting more comfortable. I normally wear a size 9 1/2 or 10. I got a size 9 after reading the reviews that they run a little big. The 9s are snug across my toes and there is a small amount of heel slippage, but they feel like the right size for me. The Copper color is gorgeous.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Strange Fit I got these in a size 10 and initially trying them on they felt narrow but the heel area felt a bit loose. The shaft is very wide for my leg. I wear these with thicker socks in the winter so I thought this fit would be ok but I noticed they have stretched out and my heel moves around when I walk in these.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not a perfect fit - wide top The short shaft of these is wider than I prefer, so I don't love the way it looks with skinny pants, and it really puffs out my boot leg pants. The color is delightful, which is why I bought them, but the nubuck means it won't age the way the black or copper will. Also, I was between sizes and erred on the side of a little larger, and now it slides on my heel and messes up my socks.
